How to Fix NVIDIA TDR Failure in Windows 11

Hi everyone,

I’m having a really annoying issue with my GPU driver under Windows 11. The display driver keeps crashing, usually during gaming but sometimes even just browsing. The screen goes black for a few seconds, then comes back with a notification that the driver has recovered. Sometimes it crashes completely and I get a blue screen with VIDEOTDRFAILURE.

My system:

• GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB)
• Driver: 546.17 (latest Game Ready)
• OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2 (Build 22631.2861)
• PSU: 650W (Corsair RM650x)

What I’ve already tried:

• Clean driver uninstall with DDU in Safe Mode, then fresh install
• Rolled back to 545.84 – same issue
• Disabled hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows settings
• Checked GPU temperatures (never above 75°C under load)
• Ran

  sfc /scannow

  and

  DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  – no errors
• Updated chipset drivers and BIOS to latest

The crash log from Event Viewer shows

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I also see

LiveKernelEvent 141

in the reliability monitor.

I’m starting to suspect the PSU might be borderline, but it worked fine on Windows 10. Could Windows 11’s power management be causing this? Or is it a known driver bug?

Has anyone else experienced this with a similar setup? Any specific registry tweaks or driver settings that helped? Thanks in advance!
